Why is the Celeron Back?

E-mail Print PDF

As of September 2007 the Intel Celeron Chip is back in the Cub line up. There are several reasons for its return to include affordability, availability, and product diversity. Below I will try to crystallize these reasons.

First, we made a big assumption on the market and the product direction of Intel. From my perspective and business philosophy, I see that as products mature and new ones are introduced, a manufacturer would let the older products die first. This isn't the case with the Intel CPUs. I looked forward to an end of the legacy name of the Celeron as the quad core CPUs came to market and that the Pentium 4 would become the low end processor. With the price drops on the P4s and the limited availability of the Celeron, it seemed to reinforce this notion.

In fact Intel has done the opposite and re-engineered the Celeron to conform to the new Core 2 architecture and at this time seem to be ending their once flagship Pentium 4 series of chips. As these chips have disappeared from the market place we needed a cost effective replacement to provide you an affordable entry level system. At this time, the only viable solution from Intel is the Celeron.
