There are several considerations when looking at upgrading from older operating systems that can prevent you from doing so. Below is some things that must be considered when looking to upgrade to Windows 7 from older operating systems. W7 Home Premium upgrade costs $119.99 at Panther Computers and we will install it for $50.
First not all computers can be upgraded to Windows 7. The upgrade edition only works with Windows XP or Vista, so older operating systems would require the full retail edition at almost double the cost to install W7. Then the drivers that allow the sound, network, video, etc to work properly must be available so that W7 will work.
Most systems with Vista will likely be upgradeable and have the drivers as many of the drivers are the same for Vista and W7. Systems running XP will, in my guess-timate, be roughly 65% or less able to run Windows 7. Any computer running any operating system older than XP, I recommend buying a new computer as you will have in my opinion less than 5% likelihood of having the drivers available to run on W7.
So as you can see there are limitations as to what can be upgraded. If you are working well on your older operating system, then stay with it until you have hardware or software needs that require you to make the change. If you have serious issues beyond viruses or as simple hardware issue that plague your Vista machine, it makes sense to upgrade now.
