Do you buy computers

E-mail Print PDF

Panther Computers does not purchase any used equipment and only buys from wholesale distribution.  We choose to avoid the Florida state requirements to track such items under what I call the pawn shop law.  Any business that buys and sells used equipment are required to get affidavits including finger prints from the seller that they are the legal owners of that equipment.

Even before this law existed we prefer to not risk taking in stolen property and dont always have the time to verify the operability of potential purchases since we are mostly busy fixing computers and not refurbishing them for resale.

As stated elsewhere, we do take old parts and PCs for recycle or reuse, but at no cost to you or us.

Where can I find my AVG License Number

E-mail Print PDF

Finding your AVG license number will depend on when you bought it and what system you have.  If you are not sure or don't want to look in the places we will mention, you can search on your computer for a text file called avglicense.txt where we stored the number, or contact us and we will look it up for you.

At first we placed the file in My Documents, but found that other users couldn't find or see it.  There were some cases of someone creating a new user and deleting the old one with the files and it deleted the license file.

For most XP machines in the last year we have stored the avglicense.txt file on the root of the system (usually the C: drive) or c:\avglicense.txt.

The security on Vista makes it difficult to access the root drive, so a handfull of systems have the file back in the main user's documents.  Subsequently we now store the avglicense.txt in the Public folder (C:\Users\Public\avglicense.txt) in Vista.

Can I Do It Myself

Sure you can download the software and run the scans and enable the protections, but much like my competitors that have adopted the Panther Tuneup software in their processes, you are missing our expertise.  Anyone can buy a sword, but without training, experience, and practice one can never properly use it.

Why Is My System So Slow - AVG

E-mail Print PDF

A few months ago a change was made in the AVG Anti-virus line that has caused concern for us at Panther Computers and that has resulted in McAfee and Norton like slowness in PCs. I have communicated these observations and concerns to Grisoft as a Distributor, but have had to find a reason and a work around until their programmers can resolve the issue in a future release. The reason is a full system scan that can be easily resolved for now by a quick change in the options.
