ACS-West

ACS-West was my first endeavor started while still in the Air Force and continued for four years.  I recently found an old business card and thought some might find the blast…

Fake Microsoft Calls

We are bumping this article back to the top as there has been a recent increase of these calls in the NW Florida area. We have one computer in the shop now that has been completely locked and is in danger of having had tax documents tampered with or “stolen. We’ve had a second customer relate that they have had no less than five phone calls trying to coerce them into letting the Indian sounding caller take control of their computer.  Watch videos and more on our Facebook page on this an other computer scams.

How to make a computer into boat anchor

If you\’ve given up on your old computer and insist it might make a better boat anchor after all, here are the steps needed to do so.  You will need one computer that has your ire, preferably a non plastic case type, appropriate amounts of concrete, safety equipment, drill, eye-bolt of appropriate size, rope-chain-or cable, appropriate place to work on your project.  If you actually want to use the anchor when done, you may also need an appropriate water craft.

Antivirus Rogue

There is a company out there, God knows who they truly are, that produces a virus that acts like an antivirus program that falsely tells you you have dozens of infections and that you need to pay them to activate their program to clean the infections.  Technically they are right, you are infected…by them.  Do not provide them any identifying information or credit card details, they are (in my opinion) crooks and the FTC should have long since found a way to close them down nd seize their assets.

It Wont Work

You may have noticed one or more commercials on TV that claims that they can remotely connect to your computer and make it “work”, however be sure they don’t charge you if they can’t.  Most problems today are spyware and virus related and there is absolutely no way this can be cleaned remotely, even if your Internet is working.  If your system is just bogged down from normal use, be sure you pay no more than you could at a local shop for a service that is hyped late night alongside the vacuum cleaners, kitchen gizmos, and colon cleansers.

Good from Bad

Here is the roundabout tale of how I came to enter the computer business back in 1986 after having started, then dropped the computer science program intending to become a professional programmer after high school. It gives you a little insight on my journey, but also hopefully awaken you to the types of scams used by computer repair stores that still permeates the business today.

Windows 7 Continues the Disappointment

Windows 7 Continues the disappointment started by Windows Vista. Based on current in store testing of Windows 7 compared to Windows Vista, there’s not much difference. Sure its a bit snappier, but still requires a workhorse computer to be half as good as an old pc running Windows XP. (“This is the worst Internet I’ve ever used” quipped a user of the Windows 7 pc in our web cafe) If the final release is no better than the current “release candidate” we believe Microsoft will continue to see a wholesale loss of clients to (Linux) Linux Mint and Apple.
